DraftKings to get permanent location at Golden Nugget Lake Charles
August 30, 2022
The Golden Nugget Lake Charles will now have a permanent retail sportsbook location for DraftKings, scheduled to open on Thursday, September 1. It will be Louisiana's largest retail sportsbook when it opens.
The retail DraftKings sportsbook launched in November 2021 at the Golden Nugget Lake Charles casino in Louisiana. However, while the permanent location was being established, it was only a temporary setup to accept bettors.
DraftKings' newest location will feature 3,200 square feet of TV screen playing live sports, 16 video poker machines, three blackjack tables, 300 lounge seats with VIP areas, and 30 self-service kiosks spread across 12,000 square feet within the Golden Nugget Lake Charles casino.
Customers will be able to place their sports bets at the casino's five ticket cages. There will also be video poker machines in the sportsbook. Customers can also play blackjack at three separate tables.
Golden Nugget and DraftKings released a statement saying, “The DraftKings Sportsbook will also offer a full-service restaurant, the DraftKings Sportsbook Bar & Grill, with a variety of dining options during breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including a ‘quick grab’ menu,”
“The restaurant will serve popular game day favorites from burgers to wings and a variety of items in between, as well as a wide selection of beer, cocktails, and frozen drinks at its full-service bar.” the statement reads.
DraftKings, Golden Nugget partnership
Following DraftKings' acquisition of Tilman Fertitta's Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG) in May, DraftKings and Golden Nugget land-based casinos have formed a partnership.
Last August, DraftKings announced a $1.56 billion all-stock offer for GNOG, when the stock was trading around $12. Over the next few weeks, the target's stock nearly doubled.
However, sales of online casinos and sports betting equities soon followed, raising concerns about the deal's fate. GNOG shares closed at $5.78 on May 4, the stock's final trading day, highlighting the stock's long-term weakness.
Michael Kibort, DraftKings' senior director of retail sportsbooks, voiced his enthusiasm about the new location, saying, "We are thrilled to be opening our permanent retail DraftKings Sportsbook inside the Golden Nugget Lake Charles."
“The massive space, big screen TVs, odds boards, and dining options will bring the DraftKings brand to life in an ideal setting for live sports experience." he added.
Meanwhile, Gerry Del Prete, Fertitta Entertainment's Chief Operating Officer of Gaming said, “Just in time for football season, we look forward to offering our guests the excitement of live games in an immersive audio-visual experience.”
“We believe this DraftKings Sportsbook will raise the standards in sports betting and offer an unparalleled entertainment experience.”
Louisiana's sports betting
Since legalization, Louisiana has developed a competitive and deep sports wagering market that has rapidly increased in terms of handle and revenue. According to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, sports betting generated nearly $13.1 million in tax revenue in the state of Louisiana during the first six months of 2022.
However, Louisiana's sports betting market is still in its infancy. Sports betting became legal when Governor John Bel Edwards made it a law in June 2021. The launch of retail sports betting in Louisiana on October 31, 2021, was the first step in the market's development. On January 28, 2022, the first online sports betting providers opened their doors in Louisiana.
