How Many Slot Games Are Available Online
December 13, 2021
Have you ever thought about how many online slot games are available in the world? How many slot games are there in a physical brick-and-mortar casino?
This kind of reasoning made us realize that we'd never seen a website attempt to calculate the total number of slot games in the world. And moreover, how many types of these games are there?
When you consider the number of slot games available online, the figure may be even more startling than you think.
How Many Casino Slots Are There in the World
According to data on statista.com, there are at least 3,600 casinos in the world. However, that is a 2011 statistic, and we believe the industry has grown greatly since then.
To extrapolate the total number of actual physical slot games from that figure, you'd need to know the average number of slot games per casino and multiply that by that number.
It's safe to assume that each casino has at least one slot game, so there are at least 3,600 slot games in the world. However, we also know that most casinos have more than one slot game on the floor. In Nevada, for example, there are an estimated 165,000 games spread across the state.
Given that Nevada has 334 casinos, calculating the average number of games per casino is simple. It's just 165,000 divided by 334, which equals 494 slots games per casino. Let's say each casino has 500 slot games on average.
Let us also remember that in several countries, slot games account for a smaller proportion of all betting games on the floor. In Macau, for example, it appears that baccarat accounts for 80 percent of the casino's revenue.
The average casino in the world may have 250 slot games. If there are 3600 casinos in the world, each with between 250 and 500 slot games, the total number of slot games could be in the range of between 900,000 and 1.8 million, worldwide.
But How Many Slot Games Are There
Clearly, not every slot game in every casino is the same as the one next to it. Most casinos offer a wide range of games. We're back to making accurate predictions, and the math is about to get even fuzzier.
We simply do not know how many of each type of game is available in each casino. Based on the number of different games available from a single supplier, we might be able to make some estimates. Let's take IGT, one of the world's largest manufacturers of slot games.
Can we go to their website and see how many games they make? When we visit the IGT website and look at their game library, we see that they claim to have the world's largest library of slot games. When we search for their games, we have the option to select “all games.” This produces a list of 559 distinct games.
This is clearly above average, so we can assume that the average number of different games from each producer is significantly lower. Let's say each producer produces 200 games on average.
You can't extrapolate an average number of different types of games per casino because many casinos will have games that can also be found in other casinos.
How Do the Different Kinds of Slot Games Work
Clearly, with so many types of slot games available, you'll notice a wide range of different game-play features. However, the variations are likely to be fewer than you think. At the end of the day, all slot games have the same thing: spinning reels with symbols on them.
For decades, slot games have used physical metal reels. A lever, springs, and gears were used to move these. This changed in the late twentieth century when electro-mechanical games became the norm.
Of course, slot games now resemble video games or cartoons more than anything else. The reels are still there, and they spin, but most of the time they're just animations on a computer screen.
A computer program known as a random number generator determines the outcomes (RNG). The payouts for the different admixtures are designed in such a way that the casino has a significant mathematical benefit.
How Many Slot Games are available online?
So, how many types of slot games can you play? We don't have any hard and fast answers, but we do have some estimates.
There are around 20 large slot games developers and 100s of smaller developers that we know of. If we assume that each of the larger developers on average has 200 slot games and the smaller ones have created only a handful, say approximately 5 games.
This will give us a total of around 5,000 different online slot games. Whether this is an accurate estimate or not remains to be seen.
However, we are certain of one thing: there are more slot games available online and offline than you will ever be able to play in your entire life.
